This beanie was inspired by my many days of walking home from high school during the winter in Minnesota -- I always cut through the soccer fields and our neighbors backyards rather than walking on the sidewalk because it was the shortest way home, but that meant there was never a path and I always felt like I was traversing an arctic tundra to get home! Brr!
This pattern will be a free pattern used by Luke (aka Wool Enthusiast) with Huggable Happiness Corp. (teenage run non-profit) in their effort to compile free patterns for knitters interested in helping create warm hats/mittens/scarves to underprivileged kids in his community.
Note: Test knit will be conducted in my Ravelry Group.
Teen/Young Adult (Fits head circumferences 20” – 22” 51-56 cm). Size is easily adjusted and explained in pattern.
Brim diameter: 9” (23 cm) unstretched. Beanie is very stretchy and is designed with 2-4” (5-10 cm) negative ease.
Bottom of the brim to crown height: 9.5” (24 cm)
The Petite Wool by We Are Knitters (100% Peruvian Wool; 100 g 3.5 oz; 140 m 153 yds) one skein each in:
- MC: Neon Fuschia (approx. 48 g 1.7 oz; 67 m 73 yds needed)
- CC: Navy Blue (approx. 29 g 1.0 oz; 41 m 45 yds needed)
Or similar weight yarn to achieve gauge
Two sets of US13 (9 mm) or size to obtain gauge. Pattern can be worked on a short circular, DPNs, or a long circular for the magic loop method.
Crochet hook (for provisional cast-on)
Stitch marker (6)
13 sts / 18 rounds = 4” (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch using US13 (9 mm) needles after a light blocking.
Provisional cast-on, joining a double brim, lateral braid (instructions in pattern), stranded colorwork, knit stitch, basic knitting decreases
The pattern is written out, the colorwork is only charted. Pattern has been professionally tech edited by Luke at Wool Enthusiast.
I’m looking for at least three testers.
Testing call posted: December 4, 2019.
Pattern will be sent via dropbox link to Ravelry DM NLT: December 7, 2019. Pattern is currently in final edits with tech editor.
Test deadline: January 10, 2019 (deadline is semi-flexible -- the pattern will be published mid-end of January as part of the Huggable Hapiness Corp’s project).
To successfully complete this test knit, I ask that you:
Track the yardage you use
Let me know any time you have doubt about something in the pattern, you find a mistake (actual or suspected), an instruction seems unclear, etc. If you are wondering about it, I am sure other knitters are too!
Finish your project by the deadline noted above, including blocking and photographing.
Create and complete a project page (including gauge, needles, yarn used, and photos of the finished piece) and link it to the pattern page with the pattern is released. (I’ll let you know in this thread once it is released)
Bonus: If you are willing to share photos on social media (both in progress and of your FO), you would be my hero!
